Understanding Pelvic Floor Health: Free Seminar Aims to Break the Silence
5/29/2025
Pelvic floor issues affect millions of people of all ages, yet they are rarely discussed.
Nearly a third of all women will have at least one pelvic floor disorder at one time in their lives, studies show. However, pelvic floor issues aren’t just a woman’s health issue. Research shows approximately 16% of men also have pelvic floor disorders.
The pelvic floor plays an important role in supporting the bladder, bowel and the uterus. Pregnancy, childbirth, prostate cancer treatment, obesity and chronic constipation can all weaken the pelvic floor, causing conditions like incontinence of the bladder and bowel.
Community members are invited to join physical therapy specialist Erica McMahan, P.T.A., for an open, informative seminar that covers the essentials of pelvic health and how you can feel better, move better and live better. The free seminars will take place at two locations:
- Northwest Health – La Porte: Tuesday, June 17, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., in the Pine Lake Conference Room, 1331 State St., La Porte
- Northwest Health – Porter: Monday, June 23, from 8 to 9 a.m., in the Community Room, 85 E. U.S. Highway 6, Valparaiso
Topics McMahan will discuss include the importance of the pelvic floor, understanding incontinence (types, causes and what you can do), how pelvic pain connects to the back and hips, and how pelvic floor therapy can help.
“If you experience bladder leakage, pelvic pain, discomfort during sex or with movement, or are simply curious about how to take better care of your core health, this seminar can provide the information and support you need to take the next step toward feeling better,” McMahan said.
