Northwest Health – Porter Performs First Combined AFib Treatment in Single Procedure

                      2/27/2026

Dr. Mark DixonNorthwest Health – Porter has successfully completed its first combined minimally invasive procedure to treat patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (AFib), addressing both abnormal heart rhythm and stroke risk in a single setting.

The procedure was performed by Mark Dixon, D.O., a cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders, and Interventional Cardiologist Sandeep Sehgal, M.D. The innovative approach pairs pulse field ablation to treat AFib with implantation of a left atrial appendage closure device during the same procedure.

AFib causes the heart’s upper chambers to beat irregularly, which can allow blood to pool and form clots in a small pouch called the left atrial appendage. If a clot travels to the brain, it can cause a stroke.

Dr. Maya KommineniCardiologist Maya Kommineni, M.D., who referred the AFib patient for this concomitant procedure said, “My patient was symptomatic from the medical treatment of atrial fibrillation and failed a recent cardioversion, a procedure aimed to restore a normal heart rhythm. In addition, he wanted to stop taking blood thinners. Therefore, I sought an approach that would address both issues to provide optimal care for the patient. By referring to cardiac electrophysiology, both of the patient’s concerns were addressed by Dr. Dixon and Dr. Sehgal, who were able to join forces to complete this concomitant procedure with minimal sedation and down time for the patient, maximizing his safety."

During the first part of the procedure, Dr. Dixon used pulse field ablation technology to precisely target and treat the areas of heart tissue responsible for the abnormal rhythm. This advanced, non-thermal energy selectively affects heart tissue while minimizing impact on surrounding structures.

Dr. Sandeep SehgalIn the same procedure, Dr. Sehgal implanted a small, umbrella-shaped device to seal off the left atrial appendage. Over time, heart tissue will grow over the implant, permanently closing the area and reducing the risk of stroke. For some patients with non-valvular AFib, this device may provide an alternative to long-term blood-thinning medications.

“This milestone reflects our ongoing commitment to providing advanced heart care close to home,” said Dan Doherty, chief executive officer at Northwest Health – Porter. “Patients in our region can receive leading-edge treatment right here, without traveling far from family and support.”

AFib is the most common heart rhythm disorder in the United States and significantly increases the risk of stroke. Symptoms may include heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue or lightheadedness, though some people have no symptoms at all.

Patients experiencing symptoms are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider.
